Magnificent vintage damascening Christian cross pendant from Toledo, Spain. Circa 1960s. This pendant is an astonishing find with its hand etched religious motif with gold on the oxidised black metal base. The technique of damascening has been practised in Japan for a long time, and this technique was then imported to Toledo, a major European city. The craftmanship of damascened products requires skilful expertise.
The centre of the pendant features bowl of grapes surrounded by the ox, the lion, the flying eagle and the "living creature with a face of a man", which are the four living creatures next to the throne according to the Bible.
This pendant is in good vintage condition with an unnoticeable trace of wear and age. There is a small mark on the body of the cross pendant, which is no bigger than 2mm.
